About Egypt > Baharia Oasis Introduction
 introduction

Bahariya Oasis, the northern desert of Egypt, is considered one of the lowest points in Egypt. The oasis covers an area about 2000 square. Bawiti is the main capital of Bahariya oasis. It is surrounded by black mountains formatted of Quartzite and Dolerite. Bahariya is famous for its heavenly gardens of palmtrees, apricots, and olives. It is also most known for its 398 springs of mineral water such as are Beir Hakima, Beir Al Mata, Beir Haifa. Bahariya Oasis comprises many villages the most important of them is Bawiti. Qasr is the next village after Bawiti which is situated nearby it. There are also other villages located in Bahariya like Mandishah, Aguz, El Zabu, Harrah, and Hiez.

People in the oasis are descended from ancient Bedouin tribes that inhibited the desert from several decades and it is thought that their origins were from Libya and the valley people who settled in there. Also, music is one of the main activities that people are mostly interested with. They use instruments like flutes, drums, and the semsemiyya in festivals and weddings. In addition to their traditional song that they are keen on handing it over their kids as it is considered a part of their traditions although they started to be involved in the modern song from Cairo and the other parts of the whole world.

Nowadays, Bahariya Oasis is connected with a paved road to Cairo that turned the life to be easier for travelers to reach there. But there were some changes in Bahariya people`s lifestyle as the paved road brought with it the electricity, television and many other things from the modern life, leaving people their being affected by these new methods. Regardless of those facts about modern life, the Bedouin people are still conserving their traditions and customs.
