Burullus Protected Area
Burullus Protected Area is located in Lower Egypt, in Kafr El Sheikh Governorate; it encloses the whole area of Lake Burullus with its numerous islands, more than 50, these islands are considered as an excellent place for a diversity of plants and animals as well as birds. Lake Burullus is considered as the second largest lake in Egypt and it is separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a sand strip. The entire protectorate is about 460 km2. From the perspective of sustainability; the main objective of this protectorate is to preserve the endangered ecological values and protect the Burullus wealth through sustainable management. Burullus protected area is also aiming to improve social and economic opportunities for local community and to improve the awareness for the site conservation and to stand up against over-fishing, over-hunting and water consumption.
The Burullus Protected Area has a wide range of habitat types; variety of sand formations, Islands of different sizes, salt marshes, reed beds. It is also very rich with diversity of species of flora and fauna, about 89 kinds of plants, more than 53 species of birds, 15 types of mammals were recorded. In addition to 94 insect species, 22 species of reptiles and amphibians including the Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta) and the Green Turtle Chelonia mydas which are in danger of extinction. Several Human-made swamps also exists in this reserve, it is used as fish farms, saltpans, canals and drains carrying water from irrigated fields. Burullus protected area has 25 different kinds of fish.
