Dakhla Oasis covers an area of around 2000 square kilometers, bordered on the west by the Great Sand Sea, on the east is bounded by the Abu Tartur Plateau and on the north by a high limestone barrier.
Dakhla is the most highly-populated region in El Wadi El Gedid Governorate (New Valley) despite of being small in size.
Archaeologists with many specialists were involved in searching in Dakhla for many decades for the oasis` long history. There are many sites to visit in the area using a 4 wheeled 4x4 vehicle.
The Dakhla Oasis Project held by the Egyptian government is dedicated to investigate the whole oasis and its sites where human activity at a wide range took place. It is also working for the development of the area`s potentials including mineral resources, agriculture, industry as well as tourism along with carpet manufacturing, basket making, jewelry, wood working and pottery.
Tourists can wander through the old village and explore the monuments dating to the Pharaonic, Graeco-Roman, Christian and Islamic eras which shows that the area was inhabitant throughout the different ages. |
