About Egypt > Fayoum History

About 70.000 years age, Lake Qaroun was formed due to the flood of the river Nile, hence Fayoum became the first agriculture site in Egypt, if not in the world, even now Fayoum Oasis is famous for its delicious fruit ,vegetable, and even chicken.

Pharaoh Amenemhet III of the 12th Dynasty the first who decided to develop agriculture in Fayoum, and also dug a big canal form the Nile to the north of Beni Suef (Egyptian City), after that this area became an interesting fruitful place to every one, then in (1842-1797 BC) Amenemhet III built Hawara Pyramid which is now a famous touristic site that must be visited in Fayoum.

Throughout El Fayoum long history, Fayoum had many different names, the pharaohs called it Tash (the land of the lake), then the land of El Fayoum was reclaimed during the middle kingdom, it was known as Shidt (it means the reclaimed), when Herodotus, the great Greek historian, visited El Fayoum he called its lake Moeris which was derived from the old Egyptian word MR WR (the Great sea), for its fertility and rich yield of wheat.

Ptolemy the second, called it Arsinoi in the honor of his beloved wife, the Roman paid much attention to El Fayoum where they exported wheat to Roma via Alexandria and called it crocodopolis (the city of the crocodile).

After the foundation of Aswan High Dam, Lake Qaroun received less and less water as the high dam led to kind of stability in the level of the River Nile.

Fayoum was actually a sea that is why it was called Piom, it is located not too far from Cairo, although a lot of people call it Fayoum Oasis, but it is not a true Oasis, in prehistoric times people lived in Fayoum more than the Nile Valley, that tell us a lot about how important El Fayoum was.

there are many spelling for El Fayoum such as:

  2. Fayum
  3. Fayom
  4. Al-Fayyom
  5. Fayom
  6. Al-Fayyum
