Why Environmentally Friendly Hotels:

Everyone knows that eco-friendly hotels save a lot of money; in addition they give their guests the chance to contribute in something good towards their mother earth.

Tourists are beginning to realize that the best accommodation is green hotels, as these hotels care so much about the environment whether in water and energy conservation matter or other matters such as recycling, and reducing the consumption of natural resources.

Some people have awareness about how to save at least water and energy, and to recycle, but this awareness disappear when they travel, as they consume in hotels much more above their needs, it does not have to be this way

Make sure when you are on a holiday that you book your accommodation with green hotel, I know that there are not many hotels which are aware of green concept, but at least they will apply the idea when they see many visitors who are interested in booking with green hotel only.

Green Seal (is an organization that certifies the environmental actions of different businesses), this organization made a survey couple of years ago and found out that:

1- An average 150 rooms use in one week as much as 100 houses with minimum 4 persons per house do in one year, which means that is a lot of waste.
2- Houses do not use light during the night while hotels are on 24/7 with light and air-conditioning…..
3- People in houses do some self-monitoring as they are aware of the cost when they misuse water and energy.
4- Some items in houses can be reuse such as soap, shampoo, food, and other stuff, on the other hand hotels have a one-use policy, that also leave a lot of waste.
5- People build houses to fit maximum one family, while hotels are being built to fit many guests, causing unused space to be built and heated/ cooled.

Another issue to be considered is that, people tend to cut a forest down to build a resort, which means the local ecosystem has been destroyed, influencing animals, air, water, and even humans.

You can be involved in reducing wastes in the hospitality industry by booking your accommodation in green hotel, if you can not find a green hotel in Egypt, that because most of hotels are not yet aware of sustainability concept, and they do not promote their environmental actions, you can also help hotels which are not aware of the danger of unnecessary wastes take a step forward to be always green. You can propose few suggestions to the management of the hotel to think green such as recycling programs, sheet and towels reuse programs, bulk bathrooms amenities, and using power saving lights, if they do not have such programs, you help them to keep it in mind to do it in the future.
