About Egypt > Farafra Oasis History

Farafra Oasis, Egypt, is the least known Oasis in Egypt, but yet the most beautiful, in ancient period, Farafra Oasis went through 3 phases, in about 9000 BC, 6000 BC and 4500 BC, Farafra Oasis was a mystery in the Egyptian history.

There are some evidence that support the fact that Farafra Oasis was occupied in pharaonic times, however, people connected Farafra Oasis with some legends and mysteries, one of them is the Cambyses army disappearance, who conquered Egypt in the 6th century, as he sent 50,000 men to Egypt to destroy the Temple of Amun, they were sent from Thebes to Siwa, and as they were moving from their origin to cross Farafra Oasis, they vanished and no one heard from them again, and they never reached Siwa.

Farafra Oasis, Egypt, was also occupied during the Roman period to be a link between Libya and the Nile Valley, after that the Arabs entered Farafra Oasis from north Africa, and they brought Islam with them to be the official religious in Egypt.

Islamic Era (641-1798):

Islam came to the western desert through north Africa, not from the Nile valley, Farafra Oasis, Egypt, was the first Oasis in Egypt that was conquered by Arabs, Islam was moving slowly in Farafra Oasis but it began to spread in the 10th century

A slit change happened in Farafra Oasis, Egypt, when Ottomans came to rule Egypt, as more corruption and a further decline in the economic situation and population.

Farafra Oasis, Egypt, suffered greatly from desert raids, but once the Europeans began to appear in Egypt, the raiders came at night to steal the inhabitant`s crops and other food.

Modern Times:

The first known European visitor to Farafra Oasis, Egypt, was called  Frederic Cailliaud in 1820, it took him 32 H to get to Farafra Oasis from El Hayz in Bahariya Oasis, he visited Qasr El Farafra village, and he found 180 inhabitants there, those people lived in poverty, as there was a lack in water supply, and the agriculture was limited.

In the recent times, Gamal Abdel Nasser`s project has brought prosperity to Farafra Oasis, in addition to many other facilities such as new schools, hospitals, mosques, and electricity services, which encourage people to move there, also tourism has improved in this area up till now as the beautiful healing nature of Farafra Oasis attract tourists to come more than once.
